  •  Evaluation of surveys/ questionaires
  •  Evaluartion of location shots

Audience Research

I am conducting secondary audience research to gain more information about what sort of poeple emjoy watching thrillers and hwy they watch them.
In my opinion thrillers was watched to gain a 'thrill' anf for entertainment purposes. When they are filmed based on true stories or in a fimilar way to the viewer it makes it even more intriging to watch as it has the ability to draw in the viewer more. This is also done in the sense of having natural and realistic characters which the audience can relate to, this puts them on a personal responce with the characters of the thriller.
Through my research I have discovered that thriller films are typically rated age 18+, this is due to the horrific images protrayed and sometimes containing nudity.

To portray the research I have found myself and Rachel Pride made this Emaze to demonstrate the technical elements of a thriller film. This includes the costume, lighting, props&setting and sound.

Begining Of Thriller Planning Lesson

On friday I had a double media lesson. In this lesson we began planning our thriller movies. Myself and Rachel Pride partnered up and began brainstorming. I believe Rachel and I will work really well together as we have ver similar creative minds and just flow off each other. We have the same work ethic so I can trust her to put in equal amount of work into everything.
Our brainstorming went really well and we managed to get lots of work done in this double lesson. We got all of our A3 sheets scanned and moved onto the computers so begin typing up everything we had discussed. After the lesson had finished we were so in the mode we stayed in during third period to get on with extra work and move ahead. I ended up staying in for the entire day, during lunch, fourth and fith period. In all of this time I had managed to type up all of the planning for The Narrative, Mise-en scene, Sound, and Backstory.
In this time we had also chosen the actors (apart form one) to use within our project and made a group chat with them all so we could discuss our ideas with them. From there we were able to develop our characters and put alot of thought and detail in them.

Evaluation Of Prelim Task

Strengths
camera angles
We used a variety of angles to create the right atmosphere and tension we were aiming for. I believe the camera angles worked really well in this prelim task and helped to create that professional vibe.
Editing
I believe we demonstrated a wide range of skills for editing. We used straight cuts, fades, blurs, match on match action and created a section which resembled a CCTV camera. I think all of our editing showed off our skills and worked well with the camera angles to make it continuous and flowy.
Mise-en scene
Lighting was a good aspect which was thought about considerable throughout the process of filming. Whilst shooting the parts where Paddy was tied up, we thought hard to make sure it created a more violent atmosphere than the scenes with myself and Csenga. To do this we used a separate light source and placed it in different angles to create different shadows and brightness etc. We even filmed a section using the strobe option.

Titles
The titles worked affectively by not distracting what was occuring on screen, they were also nicely visible and not fading into background.

Weaknesses
Mise-en scene
I dont believe the Mise-en scene used within our project was of the standard of something professional. I believe this is the aspect in which let us down the most. We didnt take much thought into what the sets look like. However we didn't have the time or money to get sets which would have represented our scenes better.
E.g. The scene in which Csenga and I exchange the money: the black backdrops don't do anything to help create affect or provide the viewer with understanding as to where they are.
Our use of pros were very limited and we just kept everything simple.

Sound
The plane engine non diegetic noises are too loud and disrupting for the scene. The images of Paddy were taken to create tension and I feel like the diegetic noises ruin this and make it seem unprofessional and not to the desire of what I want.

What I have learnt

  • Filming may not go right first time, so dont assume you have all the content you need. Allow yourself time to go back and perfect filming or gets shots you may have missed or filmed incorrectly.
  • Provide yourself with lots of time to edit, you can always make it better and better.
  • Dont leave anything your not 100% happy with.
  • GET PLANNING DONE. Even if it takes you a while to do the planning. As long as you know exactly what it is your doing so you have a guide line. Dont dive into filming blind as it will just be messy.
  • Think about every single shot.
  • Mise-en scene is very important. Make sure every prop means something and everything is used to create create the scene what it is.
  • Dont make it look like a trailer.

Mad Max Analyse

Mad Max: Fury Road (George Miller)

Mad Max begins with a pitch black background showing no titles. A voice over begins striaght away, "My name is Max". Straight from the begining it is establishing that we are listenign to the protagonist of the movie. The balck background still leaves a sense of mystery and suspsion to the viewer. The voice over goes onto say "my world is fire and blood." The black background fades up to this red gruesome colour resemberling splatters of blood on the screen. Here we see our first title. It is presented in a sans serif style in block capital blod letters. it is placed central on the screen making it clear that they want the viewers to read and comprehend it. Over the top of this a non diagetic recordings of screaming, radio transfers and new reports can be heard. This is doen to create tension and provide the viewers with extra information as to what is occuring in this world at that point. This helps to set the scene.
The black background appears again and ontop of this we see more titles. the titles are presneted differently now as there are two seperate ones appearing on one screen. This could suggest that they are off equal importance. The actors titles are presented in the same style as previously however they are not shown in 3D. Underneathe this it states what roles they are playing in the movie. The way in which they have presented this is intresting as it demonstates the kind of violent, blood thirsty characters that they are. The brown neautral shade contradicts harshly against the sharp red striking colour which connotes danger and violence.

A deep droning sound fades the stactic non diagetic add ins of new reports etc back into the voice over. And again goes back into the news reports. The black background quickly fades to a black and white clip of a long shot. This shot shows bare trees beig forcefull psuhed by a strong gust of wind. All of the tree's moves insync in one direction as loud gust of wind are heard underneathe a news report stating that nuclear bombs are being set off. This suggest that what we are seeing as an audience is what is occuring within the entire world of the movie. The black and white affect demonstrates that the world is damaged. Non diagetic sounds of heavy breathing can be heard throughout. This adds to the erie atmosphere.

There is a small crescendo and at the slight climax we see the first real clip of the film. It is an establishing shot of orange desert, which is all can be seen for miles. Moutains of stone and dust can be seen within the distance. No life source can be found except for a man stood nearly central with his back facign the camera. This entitles a sense of mystery. As the voice over continues we are lead to beleieve that this vocie belongs to the male character stood in the shot. Now we know who our protagonist is. The camera begins to slowly tilt downwards and lands on what appears as a rock. Within the shot we see a lizard and whispers are are now heard. These sounds are not dialogue as they appear to be wihtin the characters mind. This plays with the idea of being mad, suggesting the film title 'Mad Max'. The lizards turn around and it is clear to the viewer that it has two heards. This automatically plays with the idea of abnormality and madness, a key theme so far. The camera angle establishes Max as a dominating character. The lizard begins to move quickly towards the protagonist. As this occurs we hear the sliver of the liazrd as it moves and the whispers increase in volueme and pace, it helps to create a chaotic and mad atomsphere. The whispers provide an affect that they are talking to you directly as a viewer. It gives a sense that you are understanding what it is like inside of the protagonists head and allows you to sympothise with him a little bit.

This is all taken as one long take. This plays with the ideas of how long Max's life has been like this for. It suggest that the end of time has been stretched out for so long and provides themes of loneliness and isolation in the viewers minds. The whispers build up to a small crescondo and are silenced at the point of build up by the protagonist squishing the lizards with his left foot. This suggest that he is killing the voices inside of his head, again suggesting that he is mad.

The extreme long take has been disrupted by a cut to a over the shoulder shot. Here we see that the protagonist is looking into a vast of nothing; again suggest the idea of isolation. He moves his head around to his right, so now some of his face is clear and it is visual to the viewers that he he is eating the lizard he had just killed. This connotes several aspects about his character. His determination is real. This demonstrates he has the willingness to survive, no matter what. Also that he is almost heartless. He can kill a living animal to provide for himself in a heart beat. As he chews we can hear the squelching of what remains of the lizard inside of his mouth.

All of a sudden the pace of the film changes massively. All of the takes become short snippets and editted very quickly together. Max head to his car and kicks the mysetrious objects spilling out of it. He begins packing frantically. The sudden pace and urge to get away suggests a sense of danger which he must escape. The engine is running at this point of rapidness. The short takes are filmed with lots of close ups and extreme close ups of detailing of the car. The car helps to suggest what time it is they are living in. It can not be the past as history's technology was not as advanced to create cars of this standard. This then connotes that it is set in the future after the distruction of the world or some sort.
The zoom in to an extreme close up shot connotes the pace in which things are going at. It helps to speed up the scene confusing the viewer and creating more mayhem.

Sound Planning- Thriller

 Sound planning

We want the majority of our project to be carried by a gentle and calming incidental music, almost as if that is the music which is playing wihtin the Dr's room to calm Jasper down. It will be very soft at the begining then build up to a crescendo as memories build up untill the point of the push where there will be a climax. This kick starts off the rest of the movie, which you do not see.
We are still unsure wether we want to create out own music using a synthesizer or use a copy-write free way of music. Ambient sounds including Dr Winters pen scribberling and pages turning etc. Also birds which can heard from outside of the window, again this is used as a calming aspect for Jasper.  We want to be carefull with ambient sounds as after I had analysed other students work I discovered that the background noise can be very harsh and distracting in comparrison to the rest of the scene, like a loud fuzz over layerd. So we dont have this, we have decided to add in the sound needed to create verisimilitude.
Sound Bridges will be used as Jaspers goes back inot her flashbacks to describe how she is feeling and provide the viewers with extra information.

Mise-en scene Planning

Mise en scene- Settings
For the setting of this our ideas lead us to the conclusion of using the study at the Contempory (an art exhibition in Nottingham.)
On Saturday myself and Rachel are going to go to this location to ask if it is possible for us to film there and take an hour or so out of there morning. If the possibility of this is not available that Rachel and I will have to find a new location for this scene. We will work hard in attempt of correcting the Mise-en scene so it has a sense of verisimilitude.
For the setting of this our ideas lead us to the conclusion of using the study at the Contempory (an art exhibition in Nottingham.)
For the flashbacks of Jasper's happiness we want really beautiful shots to connote this. For these shots we have settles on locations including Highfields Park, Wollaton Park, and Two locations unknown to others which myself and Rachel have found previously which we beleive would be perfect for view shots. The reason for our decion to film at these parks is because they have large and glamerous building and lakes which can create amazing views and shots.
Mise-en scene - Costumes
Jasper Wynne
Alice's charcter we want to represent in two very different ways. Whilst in thearpy we want her charcter dressed in white. This is done to resemble her near control over her anger and left with is her depression. The colour white we chose as it links with connotations of purity and innocence and she reveals all of the hidden thoughts within her head. The colour white would also resemble the idea of heaven and afterlife, suggesting she is angelic or suicidal. Make up will tie in with this by having white aspects and her hair will be down and messy. During the flashbacks we want to dress her charcter in red. This is to connotes the theme of anger and depression which she is suffering with. Her flashback reveals her dark past and we want to strognly show this through colours. Myself and Rachel decided that we want colour to portray a large role in our project as we feel they work exceptionally to connote to themes.  Her makeup in these clips will be red and raw using eyeshadow. We thought Alice would also be good for the role as she has natural curly messy bright ginger hair. The red hair hair was perfect towards detail in her character.
Dr Winters
George's character has to resemble something of a professional nature due to his job title. However we dont want him to look intimidating but more approachable. For this we have decided to dress him in suit trousers, a shirt and a casual brown jacket. We chose the colour brown as it is a neutral and earth colour. This is to resemble his realistic yet comforting nature.
Collette Wynne
No formal descions have been made so far in terms of this characters costume.

Lighiting
We decided we want the lighitng to resemble the dark times in Jaspers past and what it has become. For the flashabck were going to keep them fairly dimly lit. The push scene we want as the darkest scene as this would connote that it was the darkest time in the protagonists life. Whislt in thearpy we want the room brightly lit, this is to give it an angelic feel. It will connot that it is a safe room and she cant be hurt there, able to express what blocking up her head.

Begining Of Narrative Planning

Rachel and I began our Thriller movie task today. Weve started with the planning of the Narrative.
Our basic story line consists of three characters.
  • Jasper Wynne (18) - Protagonist
    • Portayed by Alice Malyon
  • Benjamin Winters A.K.A Dr Winters  (23)- Therapist
    • Potrayed by George Bartram
  • Collette Wynne (?) - Protagonists Mother
    • Unknown at the moment
Backstory
Jasper had a really simple family life, filled with love and compassion. Growing up was difficult for Jasper as her Dad worked away constantly, this filled her with neglect without that important farther figure in her life. Jasper and her mothers relationship was unbreakable, however when they argued it was an accurate representations of an explosion. At the age of 13 Jaspers mother died, from a very young age this created a stem of depression and anger. As a child she was diagnosed with anger disorders which was rooted from the absensence of her farther.
The Push

What the viewers dont know untill the end of our project was the she killed her mother in the act of a rage. They were having an arguement at the top of her stairs. The arugument is heated and unheard to the viewers, so what it was they were arguing about is unknow. The idea is to have one Long Take; this will resemble to exteent to how long the arguing was going on for. Jasper attempt to walk away but Collete just keeps nagging her. This leads towards Jasper pushing Collette. The fall kills her and is forever known to the rest of the family that Collete just 'fell down the stairs'.

The Narrative
Our project begins inside of a therapy room. This is where we are introduced to the character Benjamin Winters. The scene begins with the pair in mid-convocation, Benjamin is asking Jasper questions in which she is struggerling to answer to. Answers for these question will be included within flashback and childhood memories. To recreate these memories we have asked Alice is she could provide us with videos of herself and her family as a child.

Review of other students work 2

Harriet Richardson Thriller Project

Thriller strengths
Camera angles
  • Slow pan across the photos of the murder. This works as an establishing shot to represent what has happenend to draw in the viewer.
  •   Extreme Close up of photos and string attaching it, this works to provide extra information for the vierws.
  • Close up of both girls faces and extreme close up of eyes. Shows a comparison between the two girls and perhaps links them.
Editing
Begins with slow paced cutting, this strecthes out the lengths of the scene making it come across as more time consuming and stressfull for the detective. Towards the end of the scene as more inforamtion is suggested about the killer, it becomes more fast paced cutting. this created chaos in the scene. Overlaying with fade was used as the detectivewas pinning the photos onto a board. This was a good affect as it helped to connote time moving forward.
Sound
non-digetic of the phone call works really well to draw the viewers in straight away and ge tthem hooked. It begins forcing the viewers to question themselfs like "who is the girl on the phone? whos on the other side?"
more non diagetic sound used was a police radio which is muffled, this works affectively as it shows the extent to which the siuation is and connotes that the proagonsit in it may be a police officer investigating the murder.
Use of ambient sound which have been over layered was a good idea as it makes the extract seem more professional. This is because if they had acctually used the real sound then you could be able to hear all of the background fuzzy noises which contradics the instense incidental music.
Mise en scene
It is ovbious that alot of thought was used in deciding the locations. They are used affectively to ensure verisimilitude.
Titles
The titles are presented in sans serif. The first set of titles appear on the screen seperately and in different colours of purple and white. The white font establishes the name of the production company, to represent that this is an important title it is shown with big lights streaming off the letters; this makes it very extravagant.
The names of the actors/actresss appear in a thin black sans serif at the corners of the screen, this is good as it dosent take attention away from the clips but stands out enough that it is still seen.

Thriller weakness
Camera angles
At the end of the project when the girls faces are in Extreme Close Up, they are presented in slightly different angles. However these angles are only slightly different but not contrasting enough to make a statement. So it looks like a mistake.
Editing
Pehaps too much rapid flickering shots of the muder and murderer. The pace is so fast that you cant concept what it is your looking at and dont have the oppotunity to take it all in.
Mise-en scene
Within the room which is meant to be the 'office' where the detective is working you can see aspects of it which suggest it is a family house. This dosent create verisimilitude.
Titles
There is a flickering title which is too different from the others. It is distratcing and looks unprofessional.
From this photo screenshotted of Harriet's blog it demonstrates that she took alot of pride in her presentation. The background is filled with colour and personality. She has used alot of photos wihtin her work and lots of detailed writing. She also uses alot of different sources of website to present her work, an example of this would be her 'emaze'. I think Harriet's blog is a good example.

Review of other students work 1

The first blog I am reviewing is Abi Glynns. Ill be disscusing the strengeths and weakness of her videos and blogs.

Thriller Strengths
Titles
Black background and titles presented in a white and red colour. It is sans serif so it worked well of standing out and drawing a viewers eye. The two colours are very startling and contrasting. I like the use of the colours red and white and they symbolise innocence and danger and could resemble the idea that someone could look innocent but thats not the whole story.
A wipe is used for the title 'presents'. And used again in the next shot for the title 'Marvellous Movies'. I think this is a strength as it demonstrates skills and looks professional.
Camera angles
Abi uses a wide range of camera angles. Such as: A long shot as the antagonist walking past the camera onto field; An extreme close up of a volts box; A zoom out as he sits on the bench; A close up of the antagonist and slight pan across the tools hung on the wall.
Sound
Abi used a variety of sounds including abient sound and incidental music expecially and a voice over. The voice over is a good affect as it helps provide the viewer with extra information so they have a better understanding of what they are watching. The icidental music gives a good affect as it builds tension and works in time with the editng which makes it look professional. The ambieent sound is used when you can hear the sissors cutting and the surrounding sounds in the area. This helps to create verisimilitude.
Editing
When editing Abi created a flash a red and blue colour over the top of  the clip and uses this as a transition into the next clip. These colours are a good choice as they cna be used to resemble police sirens. Uses straight cuts, continuity editing,
mise-en scene
The antagonist is dressed in all black and wearing a black turtle kneck. This stands him out straight  away as the 'bad guy' but as the lead role aswell.
The setting of a work shop room works well to create atmosphere and demonstrate what the progaonist is doing and reveals more inforamtion to the viewer.
Thriller Weakness
Titles
One of the titles are presented in a blue colour sans serif font. This I believe is a weakness as it is completely different to everything else, as all the rest of the titles are presented in red and white. The blue looks to odd in comparrison.
Sound
When ambient sound was used so viewers could hear the sissors cutting the hair, it was clear to me that the background sound was so startling loud and takes attention away from the scene. It gives an unprofessional aspect to the thriller.
camera angles
I think the camera angles work really well in this thriller and I dont beleve they can be improved.
Editing
The editng didnt have a wide variety, which could ahve been improved upon.
Mise-en scene.
Use of lighting wasent included at all. All light used was natural lighting. Mixing it up abit here would have been good to establish dark turns etc.
I dont beleive setting were used extensively or thought through to see what would create the best and most affective shots.

prelim task day 3

When editing our prelim task we noticed that one of the long shots taken of Paddy in the cubard was at a wrong angle. Because of this, when editing there was an odd black boarder around the clip. This made the video look unprofessionll and looked as if there was some sort of glitch. It also didnt help to give the menacing affect I was aiming for with the inserts of Paddy.
In these shots it demonstrates me and Csenga taking new shots of Paddy tied up. We wanted to get the best shots possible. As we were attempting to retake the eerie long shot we came up with the idea of taking a high angle in the corner of the small room to give a CCTV affect. This idea worked really well with the rest of the shots as it helped with that thriller atmosphere to build suspence and draw in the viewer.

This image shows how we worked together to gain the correct lighting and camera angle to get the affect we wanted.

We had plenty of time left of the lesson to carry on our editing. Whilst editing we came across struggles such as making the prelim look exactly as we had wanted. A problem which had occured was the lighting between two different closeup shots of paddys feet. The difference was to striking and harsh and may have confused the viewer. To solve this problem I came up with the idea of having it blurred at the begining and fading into the closeup which then fades into the next clip of a pan. This helped to create a messy affect to connote the characters confused and bewildered situation. An idea which occured which helped to make the prelium task be filled with more advanced skills was creating the CCTW affect. We decided that the high angle wasent enough to create this affect so we change the colour to be a washed out balck and white and adding a 12 hour clock into the top right hand corner of the screen. This counted up for three seconds.

Fargo opening sequence anaylisis

Fargo ( coen brothers)
In this shot it establishes to the audience that Fargo is a true story. As this is a thriller movie is adds to the suspense which the viwers feel. Given that it is real any events which happen within the feel will create more impact. music overlaying this message is string instruments such as harp or gutair. It creates a calming vibe which contradicts how thriller movies should feel to the viewer.
As the shot changes to show a light blue cold colour, begining the titles. The music changes adding in an extra instrument which creates a more unbeat sound connoting that the movie is begining. This is a establishing shot, however it does not acctually show anything visible but does create an icy atmosphere. Titles which are visible are presented at the bottom of the screen, to the right hand side. This demonstrates that they are not of much importance but sill visible so have some importance. The words which have more importance have spaced out letters. This is done to draw the eyes of the viewer more.
In this long shot it becomes clear to the viewers that the cold blue is acctually a thick fog. Within the fog a car is seen comming closer and closer to the camera. This antisipaction of this long shot strecthes out increasing the suspense, forcing the viewers to ask themselfs questions such as, "who is in the car?" and "where is it going?"
In this long shot the car is now completely visible. The questions viewers are forced to ask themselfs extends which fits in with the Barthes narrative enigmas theory. This theory often comes into place with thriller movies and opening sequences. In this shot it becomes more clear to the viewer that the vehicle is dragging something behind it. The mystery of this scene completely fits the conventions of a thriller film. At this point the music adds in a drum instrument. This creates a dramatic change to the music and the extract. The large crescendo demonstares the dramaticness of the movie inviting in the viewers more and increasing there heart rate.

As the car passes the camera  the title of the film fades in. This is presented central, capitalised and spaced out massively. This is done so the five letterd word strecthes out to nearly cover the width of the screen. This shows the importance of the tile of the movie. The black bold wiritng stands out against the icy cold background which is again brough back after the car leaves. This leaves the viewer feeling again isolated.

Prelim task day 2

Today the roles were reversed and me and Csenge were able to do the acting. Unfortunately Paddy was not able to turn up so we used assistance of others to help filming.Problems we came across whilst filming was attempting to not get unnecessarily objects within the shot as it would ruin the verisimilitude. To create it as natural as possible we had a dark black background, keeping it as simple as possible. Whenever we wanted to change the camera angle we would have to keep moving the black curtain around the room and moving the green curtain so it wasn't visible.

Prelim Task Day 1

Today we began filming  our prelim task or a thriller movie. Myself, Paddy Mcan and Csenga Nemeti took part in directing, filming and contriubuting through holding lights etc, to create the perfect shot. In todays session Paddy did all of the acting, and tomorrow myself and Csenga will be doing the acting. This gives us the chance to be able to take part in all areas of making this intro.

Before we could begin filming we had to understand exactly what shots we wanted to use and editing inbewteen the shots. To do this we made a story board of 15 shots. When filming we were extending these shots as more ideas came to mind. In the prevoius lesson we had allready created a A3 sheet covered in ideas and planned out the story of which our intro to a thriller film would become.
This photo demonstrates the type of postitions I would put myself into to get the correct camera angle I desired. This shot was a close up of paddys hands tied up, the idea was to gain extra information for the viewer by inclding objects like the back of his feet and chair inside of the image aswell.

This photo was taken when I was filming an extreme close up of Paddy's hands being tied up at the back of a chair.

Analysis Of The Machinist Opening

The Machinist ( Brad Anderson)

The youtube video of the opening scene cut off a couple seconds of footage at the begining. In these couple of seconds there are several aspects that add to this opening scene including ambient sound, diagetic sound and and two titles. These two titles are "FILMAX ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS" and "A JULIO FERNÀNDEZ PRODUCTION". These are presnted slighting to the left hand side of the screen in Reverse block. In the background we hear first an ambient sound of police sirens. This connotes that somthing violent has occured. It then proceeds so we were a diagetic sound of a soft pant and struggle, as a viewer we can not see what is happening so we are lead to beleive that someone is struggerling with something, this connotes that this person is inexperienced.

The darkness fades to reveal the person who was struggerling. At first glance you see him rolling soemthing into a carper, through a closer look you see feet sticking out of the end of the carpet. Immediatly this connotes that to the viewer that the person is trying to hide the body, creating an atmosphere of secrets. This is hightened as we have been led into a situation where we are clueless as to what is happening.
The camera is located in the same position the enrtire extract. behind the window, looking into the apartment. It is in a point of view shot which connotes that there is a person on the outside looking in, watching. The person who we asume is the protagonist is paying no attention towards the camera; or the person in which the cmaera is meant to represent. This could suggest that the person looking in may not be a person at all, but a ghost, spirit or subconcious.

Sound within this scene is mostly all diagetic noises made by the protagonist through grunting showing his stress and struggle. Over the top we hear the incidental music which begins on the title of the actress "Jennifer Jason-Gijón". The music is eerie and sinister creating a ghostly atmosphere. It is filled with long droning sounds. The noise remids me of the incidental music used in the famous shower scene of Physco by the well known director of horror films Alfred Hitchhock.  The music begins on this actress suggesting that something violent or negative may happen to her at some point during the film. This music stretches out across the entire of whats remaing of the extract. The music is made up of multiple layers of different notes an isntruments which do not compliemnt each other, this connotes to the audience what is going on inside of the protagonist's head at this moment in time.

Analysis Of The Silence Of The Lamb Opening

The Silence Of The Lambs (Jonathan Demme)

The opening sequence to The Silence Of The Lambs begins in total darkness, all we hear is incidental music. This music is filled with loud grand violins. This gives a very dramatic start to the movie suggesting that it will be filled with breath taking moments. The darkness fades to reveal a bare tree, this connotes emtiness and isolation. In the bottom right hand corner in white style font reads where the movie is taking place at that moment in time. This sets the scene helping the viewers to feel more involved in the film.
The first person we see is Jodie Foster. She is presnted from a high angle. This suggest to the viewer that she is weak and fimble. Women are often presented in this way in films as they are seen as the 'damsel in disstress'. This is done so men can be used as the heroic protagonist which can swoop in and save the day. In this case we see no men comming to help. She is challenging sterotypes and fighting for herself.

Jodie Foster is then presented from a low angle looking up at her as she reaches the top. This again challenges the sterotype women face in the film industry and reveals that this character fights for what she wants.

Once she reaches the top she is seen running away from the camera. The camera stays in a mid shot at the same distacne behind her. This connotes that she may be running away from something or someone. Over the top of her running are titles are actos, actresses and people who took part in the making of this film. They are presented in the centre of the screen in bold black capitialsed font with a white rim. This makes them stand out considerable in comoarrsion to the previous font stating where the scene was taken place. This connotes that these people are of more importance and the director wanted the viewers to know who was there to help the creation of this film.

In this close up on Jodie foster we see the determination on her face. This tells us a little bit about this characters personality as she is commited.

This is a low angle of jodie foster climbing a climbing aparatus. This is now clear to the viewer that she is not running away from someone or something but running a course. This angle demonstrates the power she has gained over the track and the lengths she is willing to go to to progress. The climb symbolises an obsticle she may have to come across during the film.

In this shot we see Jodie Foster arguable unessersarily flip over the net. This is done to demonstrate the strength she posses as a women, contradicting all sterotypes put against women in thriller movie conventions.

Analysis Of The Purge Opening

The Purge (James Demonaco)

The opening scene for The Purge begins with it's title sequence. An off black background with white writing on begins the titles with "UNIVSERAL PICTURES PRESENTS". As the titles are changing it almsot flickers away as if you were watching a faulty movie. This gives a run down impression straight away. The colour of the background being off black, having hints of yellow and green quickly flash onto the screen as the titles dissapear to the next set, help to give this impression.

After the second set of titles the flash of off colour appears again, only this time for a longer and harsher set of time. the colour are more vibrant and more obvious to the viewer. The image changed to a CCTV footage of a man mudering someone with a gun and running away. The victim falls to the ground. In the top right hand coner of the screen is the time, date, area and what it is. This connotes to the viewers that everything is being watched. All of these hideous and grotesque crimes are being commited and yet no one is stopping it. An idea of isolation a fear is what comes into the viewers mind. It connotes that you are alone in the world and have to defend yourself.

Over the top of these titles and footages is incidental music of a very light and pleasent tune. Instruments used in this include violins and pianos. This music is used to juxtapose agains the images you are seeing. This is done as the movie is about anything against the law for a limited amount of time is legal, this includes muder. So when we see these harsh images of brutual muder throughout the title sequence it is juxtaposed against this light and beautiful tune, suggesting that all of these crimes are good and postive.

A later image shows a victim on thr gound alone, whislt being beaten by a baseball bat. The lighting in this insert all comes from the one street lamp in which the victim is hurled up against. This  could connote that goodness is surrounded by darkness. The use of lighting specifically in the left of the screen means that the audience is drawn to the victim.

The grainy, deliberately poor quality of the camera helps to convey the CCTV footage, giving verisimilitude to each shot, as each is made believable for the viewer. The choice to use CCTV is noteable as, it suggests to the audience that they are witnessing something they shouldn't be. The shaky nature of each shot helps to convey the sense of unease and terror within the opening scene.

The use of fire in this shot relies on the viewers pragmatic understanding of fire and its effects on the environment and symbolic imagery. The vibrant red flame, also gives connotations of anger and pain, suggesting that the film will likely focus on these themes, themes which are common in thrillers.

The uniform, straight positioning of the bodies, immediately susggest that the victims were part of some sort of ceremonial or religious lilling. This use of violence in this manner is often used by thriller antagonists, as often the victims have no link to the antagonist, meaning the antagonist is completely random in their actions.

This long shot establishes a women attempting to climb over a railing in escape. She gets dragged back by serveral dimly lit men, this connotes that they are threatening.

The use of the sterile, plain white background gives connotations of innocence and purity to the viewer. This is thereby juxtaposed by the blood staining left by the victim.

The bold, white, sans serif style of the font used for the titles is kept away from the events shown on screen, meaning the viewer is not distracted by their presence, but they are not completely oblivious either.
